With more than 10,000 craft breweries worldwide in 2015 (source 1) and the USA and the UK topping the list, it stands to reason there is a huge demand for home brew style beer as tastes evolve and the general public strive for something a little bit different. Craft beer is not exclusive to higher end craft bars anymore. The average consumer is craving something special at home. So, let’s take a look at the rise of craft beer in the US and UK.
Craft Beer Origins
To remain unique, craft beer is developed in smaller quantities so different flavour combinations can be sampled and approved. Craft beer first appeared in the US and UK in the 1960’s and in the 1970’s there was a huge increase in home brew for strength and flavour as home brewing was legalised.
After a massive rise in the mid 1990’s due to investors clambering to get a slice of the pie and then a dip as beer quality suffered due to mass production, the market evened out again and there was a steady rise in unusual, flavoured beers primarily available in bars and clubs as dedicated and talented craft beer breweries tried to differentiate themselves from the mainstream beer companies and stand out.
The early 2000’s saw an explosion in (primarily American) craft beer demand and in the last 10 years or so, craft beer has ignited the market and gained massive popularity with a marked rise in production and variety. Beer lovers are not just limited to one or two choices anymore and endless flavours, brewing combinations and light-hearted names have been created, tried, tested and developed to suit even the most unique of palates.
More recent times have changed rapidly, and craft beer has taken leaps in the beer industry. In the last year, amid the pandemic, this type of beer has remained a popular choice for home drinkers and manufacturers have continued to up their game.
They haven’t disappointed!
